The Rt. Reverend Dr. Rupert Hoare, former Dean of Liverpool Cathedral and Debbie Abrahams, Member of Parliament for Oldham East and Saddleworth are to speak at the Holocaust Memorial Day Vigil on Saturday January 28th in The Square, Uppermill.
Speaking on behalf of the Saddleworth Peace Movement, Parish Councillor Ken Hulme said, “We are delighted that Rev Dr Rupert Hoare and Debbie Abrahams will be joining us on Saturday 28th January in Uppermill. It is so important that we never forget what can happen when racism and prejudice are left unchecked. Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to pause and reflect and remember those who were murdered by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. We must learn lessons from the horrors of the past in order to produce a better and safer future for all.”
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated internationally on 27th January each year. This date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The Vigil will take place in The Square, Uppermill on Saturday January 28th from 11.00am to Noon followed by coffee and refreshments in Uppermill Methodist Church. Note: In case of extremely bad weather the vigil will take place in Uppermill Methodist Church.
