The number of unemployed claimants in Oldham East and Saddleworth constituency in August 2012 was 3,483. This represents a rate of 7.5% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 144th highest of the 650 UK constituencies. The number of claimants is 120 higher than in August 2011 and 40 higher than in July 2012. These data are not seasonally adjusted.

Commenting on the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: “Once again the unemployment figures for Oldham are going in the wrong direction and the Government carries on with its austerity measures, increased borrowing and no sign of a ‘plan B’. We’ve had a glorious summer of sporting success but let’s hope that ministers, basking in the glow of our succesful athletes, don’t forget that the reality for the unemployed is still looking as bleak as ever
