It’s amazing how quickly time goes by when preparing for Saddleworth Summer Show, one of the main attractions of the year in Britain’s largest parish. We are now in the final stages of putting together yet another thrilling mix to entertain our many thousands of visitors and this time it is a 2 day show!! The times of the show are from 12 to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 5pm Sunday.

This year has seen a new challenge, as we have had to change venues because of drainage works at Churchill playing fields. After much searching we were lucky enough to come up with Saddleworth School, which offers a number of possibilities we have never had before, such as indoor facilities. We are grateful to the team at the school for the magnificent way in which they have responded to our needs and hope that it will also enable a number of useful continuing contacts.

However, visitors to the show are interested in our programme and attractions, not our problems and this year will not disappoint.

Shepherdess, Sheepdog Trainer and Trial Competitor, Elaine Hill demonstrates the skill, intelligence and flexibility of her Border Collies with her entertaining and educating displays of sheepdog handling and duck herding.

Particularly attractive to the younger element are the displays by BMX riders. Many of their moves are seemingly impossible, as well as being exciting. With over twenty years experience behind them, our display team has performed at many shows and on various television programmes.

Spellbinding aerobatics of a different kind will be supplied by various birds of prey. Apart from amazing the audience with their birds’ display, the keepers are happy to talk to visitors, imparting their impressive knowledge of the subject. The static part of their appearance, usually including a range of eagles, hawks, owls and falcons, offer great opportunities for photographers.

Of course, no summer show would be complete without the traditional attractions, including Punch and Judy, donkey rides and a fair ground.

There will also be a wide range of music and dance attractions, as well as charity stalls and a craft fair. Catering will include a varied assortment of food stalls, as well as a beer tent and wine bar.
