Garth Harkness

Liberal Democrat Parish Councillor Garth Harkness is launching a petition in Diggle and Dobcross to support the re-opening of Diggle Railway Station. It is expected to be presented to theTransport for Greater Manchester Committee on 13th April.

Councillor Harkness says, “Network Rail’s proposed Northern Hub rail investment plan 2014-19 to increase capacity on the railway lines from Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool into Manchester is the best opportunity for a generation to make the case for reopening Diggle Station, which closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts. When the Northern Hub Plan was first published it included the reopening of the two disused Standedge railway tunnels. It is vital they remain in the revised version of the plan to be published this summer and that the case for reopening Diggle Station is included.

“As a Dobcross resident I know how much residents in Diggle, Dobcross and beyond and visitors to the area would welcome the re-opening of Diggle Station. Diggle Station is already included in Oldham Council’s Strategic Plan but we must now seize this opportunity to make it happen”

Petition forms will be available in local post offices, shops and pubs.
