The man who died following a tragic road accident in Saddleworth yesterday has been named as 46 year old Derek Yates, also known as Dez. He died tragically after being involved in a collision on Huddersfield Road, Diggle, Saddleworth.
Mr Yates was taken to hospital but pronounced dead a short time later. His mother Carol Yates said, “Derek was an avid reader and, in his earlier years, was an accomplished boxer and karate enthusiast.” Derek had studied at the then Oldham Tech, studying maths and gaining A levels. He went to Huddersfield University, studying computer science.
Mr Yates had newly returned to Oldham from Huddersfield. He had also recently qualified as an electrician and was due to sit another exam in January, which would have allowed him to test and pass other people’s work.
There is a notorious bend close to where the accident happened. One local Diggle resident commented, ‘It is a dangerous bend but what more can be done? The bends are clearly marked. Motorists just need to slow down.’
