Some local services in Saddleworth will be affected on Wednesday 30th November as members of several Trade Unions take action in a one-day strike over proposed changes to their pension schemes

A spokesperson from Oldham Council said, “The Council are working hard to mitigate the impact of the national industrial action tacking place next week [focusing] particularly on vulnerable service users. The Council respects an employee’s right to strike and is making every effort to minimise the impact on services.”

A special webpage will be available on the Council website at www.oldham.gov.uk from Monday, November 28th 2011 and this will be regularly updated with the very latest information. This picture may change in the run-up to November 30th 2011. All residents are urged to keep checking the website and local media for updates.

The Council will focus on the continuation of ‘life and limb’ services, such as vital home and social care visits. Some services, such as day care, will be affected by strike action but users should have already been directly contacted.

Access Oldham:

The One-Stop Shop at the Civic Centre will be open as usual between 9.30am and 5pm.

Contact Centre:

The Council’s contact centre will be open as usual between 8am and 6pm taking queries about all services.

Waste and Recycling:

There will be no waste collection on Wednesday, November 30.

If Wednesday is the collection day for your area, leave out your grey (general waste) bin  as normal. The Council will aim to collect all ‘missed’ grey bins in addition to their normal rounds from Thursday onwards.

This process should be completed by Saturday, December 3. All other bins (paper, garden, food waste and glass and plastic) will be collected on your next collection day. Extra waste will also be collected if it is clearly identifiable.

Libraries, Museums and Galleries

The Express Library (self-service) within Oldham Library will be open between 9am and 5pm. The Local Studies and Archives centre will also open as usual but all other libraries are expected to be closed. Gallery Oldham will also be closed.

Registrars

A limited registration service will be available. For appointments please call 0161 770 8960.

Leisure Centres

It is expected that all leisure centres will be open as usual.

Markets

Oldham Tommyfield Market will be open as usual. The indoor market hall will also be open from 9am to 5.15pm, and the outdoor market from 9am to 3.30pm.

Schools

Many schools are expected to close. Each school should have communicated directly with parents and guardians prior to the strike action taking place. For further information on school closures please check your school website.

The latest information, and an overview of the latest proposed school and service closures, will be available on the Oldham Council website at www.oldham.gov.uk from Monday, November 28.
