Unemployment Hits 17 Year High
Government economic plans slammed as unemployment rises again.
Commenting on the unemployment statistics announced on 14th December 2011, Debbie Abrahams MP said, “Yet again here in Oldham East and Saddleworth we have had some grim news today. Nearly 9 people are chasing every job and long term youth unemployment is up by over 93% since the start of the year. The over 50s are suffering too with a 39% increase in people on benefits for over six months since January.”
“The result is now a soaring welfare bill that is creating an almighty hangover for Britain to deal with.”
“The Government is set to borrow £158 billion more than planned – more than £6,500 for every household in the country. This isn’t borrowing to support the economy through difficult times, it’s a huge new bill for failure.”
“As every month passes, it is getting clearer and clearer that the Government’s welfare to work programmes are simply failing. The lowest amount of people are coming off benefits and into work that at any time since 1998. Their welfare to work schemes are not doing the business.”
