Homewatch are warning Saddleworth residents to be on their guard when using Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs).
There have been several reports of ATMs in the Saddleworth area being subjected to skimming attacks.
There are many different ways of skimming an ATM so knowing what to look for and understanding how the scam works will help reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
The first step is to avoid using ATMs that stand alone or are in dark places, these machines are more likely to be a target for ATM skimming because it is easier for the crooks to attach the skimmer to the machine without being noticed. An ATM machine located at a bank in a well lit area is much less likely to be targeted.
The second step is to never use an ATM machine that has any sticky substances on it. This can be a residue from the glue that crooks use to attach the skimmer to the ATM machine.
The third step is to conceal your hand as much as possible when you enter your PIN code at an ATM. This will thwart the effort of cameras that can be placed at the ATM to steal your PIN number as you enter it.
If you see anyone acting suspiciously around any cash machines in the area or notice any irregularities on the ATM itself please ring 101 and report it to the police
